Help a Friend

  • Remind your friend about all the good reasons to quit but don’t nag them.

  • Spend more time together in places where there is no smoking.

  • Help your friend remove all of the ashtrays from their home and car.

  • Support your friend if they’re feeling down or cranky.

  • Tell your friend every day how proud you are of them.

  • Encourage your friend that quitting might not be easy but that it’s possible.

  • Suggest that they: 1) get help from their doctor, 2) try medications, like the patch or gum, to help with cravings, or 3) call the Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

  • Motivate your friend by telling them that quitting smoking could save them $2000 per year (if they smoke a pack per day). Go the the savings calculator

  • Celebrate their quitting milestones: 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year without cigarettes!

  • A smoke-free home is safer for your friend and their family. As a reminder, print out this sign (in Spanish) and ask your friend to hang it up. It will remind them and others that this home is (or soon will be) smoke-free.

  • Join your friend in activities that keep them busy, such as going shopping, taking a walk, dancing, watching a movie.

  • If your friend starts smoking again, encourage them to try and quit again. Most smokers have to try to quit multiple times before they are successful.
